The Science Behind Our Approach

What Is UFLI Foundations?

UFLI Foundations is a structured literacy curriculum developed by the University of Florida Literacy Institute, one of the nation's leading centers for reading research. It is built on decades of peer-reviewed science and is designed to give every child, including those who struggle, a clear and systematic path to becoming a confident, fluent reader.

Unlike traditional whole-language or balanced literacy approaches, UFLI Foundations follows the Science of Reading, a body of research that identifies exactly how the brain learns to read and what kind of instruction produces the strongest results. The program is explicit, meaning nothing is left to chance or guesswork; sequential, meaning each lesson builds carefully on the one before; and systematic, meaning every phonics pattern and skill is taught in a logical, research-backed order.

At Book Nook, UFLI Foundations anchors every K–2 literacy session. This is the same curriculum being adopted by school districts across the country, and your child gets it in a small group of six with a certified Reading Specialist delivering every lesson.

🔤
Phonemic Awareness

Students learn to hear and manipulate the individual sounds in words, the essential foundation before decoding can begin.

📖
Systematic Phonics

Every letter-sound relationship is taught explicitly and in a carefully sequenced order. No gaps, no guessing from pictures.

🗣️
Fluency & Vocabulary

Students practice reading connected text with accuracy and expression while building the vocabulary that supports comprehension.

✍️
Encoding & Writing

Reading and writing are taught together. Students apply their phonics knowledge in writing to reinforce every new skill from both directions.

Did you know? Research shows that structured literacy instruction (the kind UFLI Foundations is built on) is effective for all readers, and is especially transformative for students with dyslexia or other reading difficulties. The National Reading Panel and decades of cognitive science agree: systematic, explicit phonics instruction is the single most effective approach to teaching children to read.

What I Believe About Learning

"Every child is a reader waiting to happen. My job is simply to hand them the tools, create the space, and cheer loudly when they get there."

At Book Nook Learning Lab, I believe that structure and joy are not opposites. Explicit, systematic instruction is the foundation, but the warmth of the environment, the peer relationships, and the genuine excitement about learning are just as important as the curriculum.

I also believe homeschool families are the experts on their children. My role is to partner with you, to add the small-group expertise, the structured literacy knowledge, and the community that makes your homeschool even stronger.

Every student who walks into Book Nook gets a teacher who knows their name, understands their learning style, and genuinely celebrates every single win, big and small.

Independent Success Lab

Sometimes students just need a quiet, distraction-free space to actually get their work done. Students work independently on their parent-provided curriculum in grade-band groups (3–5, 6–8, and 9–12) with a facilitator on hand to keep everyone on track and ensure assignments are completed before the hour wraps up.

Please note: Independent Success Lab is supervised facilitation time, not instructional time or child care. A facilitator keeps students focused and on task, but this is not a teaching session.

What Our Families Are Saying

Nothing means more than hearing from the families we serve. Here is what some of them have to say about their experience at Book Nook.

★★★★★
"

My son had been struggling with his FAST scores for two years and I honestly didn't know what else to try. After working with Stacey he went from a Level 1 to a Level 3 on his PM3. I literally cried when we got the results. She knew exactly what he needed and just got to work.

★★★★★
"

My daughter was terrified going into her Cambridge AICE English Language exam. Stacey worked with her on the paper structure, the directed writing tasks, all of it. She passed with a B and was honestly shocked. We were not shocked at all Stacey prepared her thoroughly.

★★★★★
"

My kindergartener could not identify half the letters of the alphabet when we started. Within a few months of working with Stacey using the UFLI program she was sounding out words on her own. She is now reading little books and she is SO proud of herself. Honestly it's been amazing to watch.

★★★★★
"

My first grader was way behind where he should have been and his school wasn't catching it. Stacey figured out the gaps pretty quickly and started filling them in one by one. By the end of the school year his teacher told me he was right on grade level. I really can't thank her enough.

★★★★★
"

We came to Stacey because my second grader was still not reading fluently and we were getting worried. She used the UFLI approach and it just clicked for him in a way nothing else had. He is reading at grade level now and he actually enjoys it, which is something I never thought I'd say.

★★★★★
"

My seventh grader had been in Intensive Reading since sixth grade. After tutoring with Stacey he tested out and does not have to take it next year. His reading teacher was genuinely impressed. We were so relieved. That class had become such a source of stress and embarrassment for him.

★★★★★
"

My daughter had extra reading help at school all through elementary and by the time she got to middle school she was really down on herself about it. Stacey worked with her all year and this fall she finally does not need those extra classes anymore. But honestly the bigger thing is how my daughter feels about herself as a reader now. That changed everything.

★★★★★
"

I want to say something about the scheduling because it is not something you find everywhere. Stacey genuinely worked around our schedule, which is crazy busy. She never made me feel like I was asking too much. That flexibility is such a big deal for families like ours and I really appreciate it.

★★★★★
"

We were on a tight budget and I was upfront about that from the beginning. Stacey worked with us on the rate and never once made us feel awkward about it. My son got the help he needed and she was so professional and kind about the whole thing. You don't find that very often.
